Maha thupa or Ruwanweli Dagoba was build by the great king Dutugamunu who reigned from 137BC to119 BC.

According to Mahavamsa, the great chronicle of the Sri Lanka, elephant wall was constucted around Dagoba by late King Dutugamunu’s brother Saddhatissa and It was said to have been coated with gold dust.
