Established in 1895 as the Lady Havelock Hospital for Women and Children, it was christened the Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children in 1910. These distinguished ladies were the respective wives of British Governors in Ceylon – Sir Arthur Havelock and Sir Joseph West Ridgeway.

The Lady Ridgeway Hospital for Children is a tertiary care children’s hospital in Colombo, Sri Lanka. With a bed-strength of over 1100, it is now considered to be the largest children’s hospital in the world.

  1. I am writing my Memoirs for the family record and any interested friends. As I was born in 1940 at the Lady Havelock Hospital I looked for a photograph and found your web site. I wonder whether I can have your permission to use this photo in my book. I do not envisage making many copies but if it should miraculously take off I will certainly keep you informed.

  2. My dad was born in this hospital 31 October 1936 he died 11th January 2021, I’ve just been looking at his birth certificate, it’s so lovely to see a photo of where he was born
