The fishing boats drawn up on the sand in the foreground are out-rigger canoes or catamarans which were originally a raft of three or four logs lashed together and whose name comes from the Tamil ‘Kattu’ (binding) and ‘Maram’ (wood). The photo studio of A.W.A Plâté & Co, set up in Colombo, was the most successful in the island after Skeen & Co.
