The Volunteer Engineers came into association with the oldest military formation in Sri Lanka – The Ceylon Light Infantry Volunteers in 1881.The Corps of Ceylon Engineers was formed in 1911, the date of first enrollment being 23rd February 1911 under the Ceylon Defence Force.The unit was first located at the Echelon Barracks Building which was a former military barracks situated near Gall Face (1911 – 1949)
