View along a palm-fringed beach at Mount Lavinia in Sri Lanka, taken by A.W.A.Plate & Co c.1900 Colombo, situated south of Colombo the island’s capital, was originally the residence of the former British Governor and is now a hotel. The fishing boats drawn up on the sand in the foreground are out-rigger canoes or catamarans which were originally a raft of three or four logs lashed together and whose name comes from the Tamil ‘Kattu’ (binding) and ‘Maram’ (wood). The photo studio of A.W.A Plâté & Co, set up in Colombo, was the most successful in the island after Skeen & Co.
